Sue’s Story: Managing Pain and Staying Independent
At 73, Sue has found a way to keep living independently, thanks to the allied health services she receives through My Aged Care.
Sue has chronic pain from arthritis, osteoarthritis, and lumbar spine stenosis, which at times made everyday tasks like cleaning and mowing the lawn difficult. But Sue was determined to find a way to manage her pain so she could continue to do these things herself, without relying on outside help.
“I’ve always been independent,” Sue explained.
“I didn’t want someone coming in to do my cleaning or mowing. I just wanted to manage the pain so I could keep doing those things for myself.”
Through Aspire4Life assessor Kiki, Sue was connected with Aaron, a physiotherapist who designed a program to help her manage her chronic pain.
“Aaron is such an exceptional and dedicated young man who has played a crucial role in my recovery, helping me regain strength and flexibility,” says Sue with great appreciation.
With regular physiotherapy sessions, including weight training, Sue found relief from the discomfort that had been holding her back. Tasks that were becoming harder to manage became easier again.
“Now, I can mow the lawn and clean the house without as much pain. It’s allowed me to keep doing the things I’ve always done for myself, and that means a lot to me.”
But it wasn’t only about maintaining her independence at home. Sue has always had a passion for dancing – ballroom, jazz, rock’n’roll, and line dancing. For a while, she feared the pain would become too much and that she might have to stop dancing. However, with the combination of physiotherapy and regular remedial massage, Sue is still able to do what brings her joy.
“I was worried I’d have to give up dancing, but now I’m still able to go to my classes and enjoy it,” she shared.
“It’s been a team effort. Between My Aged Care, Aspire4Life, and Aaron, I’ve been able to manage my pain and keep doing the things I love.”
Sue’s experience highlights the importance of finding the right strategies to manage chronic pain, allowing her to maintain both her independence at home and her passion for dancing.
