Small changes can have a big impact

At 79 years young, client Ann is living proof that a little support can go a long way in helping older Australians maintain their independence, and their passion for giving back.

When Ann was referred to My Aged Care for support, she had been managing her household tasks on her own but was beginning to find some chores more challenging. That’s when she met Sonia, a compassionate aged care assessor from Aspire4Life, who worked with her to find simple and practical solutions to help stay on top of things at home.

Ann had already taken steps to make her daily routine easier, switching to a lightweight stick vacuum so she could continue cleaning without strain. But it was the bathroom that proved most difficult. During her assessment, Sonia suggested a long-handled, lightweight mop from Kmart that’s inexpensive, easy to wring out, and perfect for awkward spaces. It’s made all the difference.

“It’s so much easier now,” Ann shared. “I can clean the bathroom without bending or hurting myself. It’s given me back a bit more of my independence.”

A few small adaptations have allowed Ann to keep doing what matters most to her, both at home and in her community.

Although she has several medical conditions, including a history of breast cancer, Ann remains a vibrant, active presence in her local Jewish community. Every Saturday after morning service, she helps with food service at the Synagogue. During the week, she also shares her creativity and warmth through a local knitting group and even teaches painting.

Ann’s story is a wonderful example of how the right support, no matter how seemingly small, can make a meaningful difference.
