Restoring Independence

At 89 years old, Peter from Port Macquarie faced numerous health, balance, and mobility challenges that significantly impacted his daily life. Simple tasks had become obstacles, leaving Peter reliable on his wife, Heather. However, with the help of a comprehensive reablement program and innovative equipment, Peter’s life has transformed dramatically.

A new beginning

Peter’s journey began with a tailored reablement plan to address his needs and encourage independence. The program included various equipment designed to aid mobility, ensure safety, and restore his ability to perform daily tasks without assistance. Peter proudly shares how this equipment has empowered him to regain control over his life.

Enhancing daily living

One of the most significant changes for Peter has been the use of a tap turner, allowing him to use taps independently and safely. Angled knives make cutting food manageable and safe, reducing the risk of injury. Tools to open jars and bottles have made cooking enjoyable again, while a pickup reacher enables him to pick items up from the floor without risking injury. Dressing himself is now possible with a shoehorn and dress stick, restoring his dignity and independence, and taking the pressure off Heather.

Safety and convenience

Nighttime safety has also improved significantly for Peter. The urinal bottle by his bedside reduces the risk of falls, and a night light enhances his vision. The mattress wedge and tagged sheets have made bed-making easier, reducing the burden on Heather. Peter no longer worries about choking on tablets, thanks to the tablet crusher. The tipping kettle allows him to pour tea safely, eliminating the fear of burns. Cleaning up is easier with the long-handled dustpan and broom, reducing the need to bend and risk injury.

Peace of mind

The key safe at their home ensures emergency services can access their home if needed. Wide-handled cutlery and a plate surround have restored Peter’s independence while eating, reducing Heather’s caregiving tasks. Sippy cups minimise the risk of burns and spills, and chair mats and adult clothing protectors safeguard their furniture and clothing. A pillbox with a timer and alarm ensures Peter never misses a dose, reducing stress.

A safer home

Non-slip mats in the bathroom and at the entrance make their home safer, giving Peter and Heather confidence to live independently for longer. These small changes have collectively made a huge difference in Peter’s life, allowing him to enjoy activities he once thought were beyond his reach.
