Dianne discovers new opportunities in her community

When Dianne moved into her over 50’s retirement village, she quickly settled into her new home and enjoyed the social connections within her community. However, she soon found herself wanting more variety in her interactions and activities.

“I’m mixing with the same people day to day. Our conversations are often based on village life, our health, and our families, and not many residents share my interests,” Dianne said, wishing she could meet like-minded individuals and expand her horizons.

Dianne first reached out to My Aged Care looking for support with her mobility, specifically a walker to help her stay active and independent. So, when she met with Vanessa, her Aspire4Life Home Support Assessor, she expected their conversation to focus solely on practical solutions for her immediate needs. But Vanessa took the time to learn more about Dianne’s interests, lifestyle, and goals.

“Vanessa was a very professional lady who made me feel comfortable from the moment she arrived. She showed a genuine concern for my needs and discussed options using relevant information and brochures.”

Dianne mentioned her love of socialising and her desire to meet new people beyond her retirement village.

“It would be lovely to mix with people of various ages who also share my interests in music, movies, or sporting events.”

Vanessa recognised an opportunity to connect Dianne with additional support that aligned with her interests and aspirations. In addition to arranging the new walker, she introduced Dianne to Social Support services through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme. These services provide structured opportunities for seniors to engage in social activities, meet new people, and build connections in their local community. It was a perfect fit for Dianne’s desire to expand her social circle and explore new activities.

Vanessa also identified a chance to enhance Dianne’s wellbeing through meal services. By introducing more variety into her diet, these services not only improved her nutrition but also brought added convenience and enjoyment to her daily routine. Dianne also loves that they’re affordably priced, making it easier to stick to her weekly budget.

This holistic approach meant Dianne’s needs were met on multiple levels – practical, social, and personal – giving her a renewed sense of excitement and purpose.

“I had no idea that some of these services even existed,” Dianne said, excited about the opportunities ahead.

“When Vanessa said goodbye, I had a really good feeling about things to come.”

Thanks to the guidance and support provided through Aspire4Life and My aged Care, Dianne is now looking forward to making new connections and exploring everything her local community has to offer.
